POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Ultrasound Manager and Lead Ultrasound Technologist, the Ultrasound Technologist provides skill and initiative to the department�s mission through interactions with staff, manager and others as necessary. The ultrasound technologist�s primary duties are to generate diagnostic sonographic images for the radiologists, while also implementing policy and procedures as determined necessary through the manager and lead technologist.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
- Performs a wide variety of exams as required and necessary for departmental workflow.
- Assists physicians during sterile invasive procedures, such as biopsies, aspirations, thoracenteses, intraoperative, etc.
- Satisfies operational requirements for department coverage as determined by the Manager or Lead technologist.
- Prepares exam room and ultrasound equipment according to infection control, sterilization, and patient safety protocols.
- Completes exams in a timely fashion while providing quality scans for Radiology and outside departments.
- Prepares patient for exams, ensures patient comfort and modesty.
- Assumes responsibility for patient safety during sonographic exam.
- Follows departmental policies and procedures as required.
- Uses proper positioning and technique to ensure patient comfort and safety, and prevents compromised data acquisition and musculoskeletal injury.
- Performs duties required in all areas of the department, across campuses, whether within Ultrasound or when appropriate for the hospital mission.
- Works scheduled or overtime hours as required for department needs.
- Performs appropriate studies per policy/procedure and follows requisition instructions, confirming match to patient condition/history and communicating as necessary.
- Identifies and documents limitations to the sonographic exam.
- Provides views and films required by radiologists, adding views and technique variations as required.
- Provides service and care to patients of all ages.
- Maintains equipment and coordinates with management and vendors to maximize up time and minimize impact.
- Keeps exam rooms clean, tidy, and ready for use.
- Follows high-level disinfection policies and procedures.
- Ensures patient-focused customer service standards are met.
- Communicates with the patient in a manner appropriate to understanding.
- Handles telephone calls and service requests professionally.
- Treats patients and staff with dignity and respect; reports problems to manager.
- Accommodates patient needs and department staffing needs through schedule flexibility.
- Provides necessary and appropriate information on reports when required.
- Minimizes patient discussions and ensures appropriate behavior is maintained.
- Monitors patient condition and involves appropriate personnel if assistance is needed.
- Operates electronic systems (PACS, RIS, Epic, etc.) as required.
- Completes all required documentation (requisitions, procedures, hospital/insurance requirements for billing).
- Utilizes hospital's Values as the basis for decision-making.
- Follows hospital infection control and safety procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned or necessary.
- Adheres to all of BMC�s RESPECT behavioral standards.
EDUCATION:
- Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography must be obtained prior to hire.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
- American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) (OB or AB or RVT) required prior to hire, except OB/GYN (one year to obtain accreditation).
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in related clinical area preferred.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Knowledge of principles/procedures of Ultrasound and equipment operation/maintenance required.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients, coworkers, students, and physicians.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Ultrasound department requires 24/7 coverage; staff may need to work overtime or cover other shifts.
